The apparatus is convenient for determining relative surface tensions, or — after calibration with a liquid of known surface tension — the absolute surface tension of an unknown liquid. How Jaeger's Method Works

Air is admitted slowly through the tap funnel so that a bubble forms at the tip of a fine jet immersed in the test liquid. As the bubble grows, the pressure rises to a maximum just before the bubble breaks away; the side-arm manometer records this maximum pressure. Because the maximum bubble pressure is directly related to the surface tension of the liquid and the radius of the jet, the surface tension can be calculated — or compared against a calibration liquid. Using three jets of different sizes lets students check consistency and improve accuracy.
