Product Overview

The apparatus is built around a rigid bridge with raised end pieces. Small metal blocks screwed to these ends secure either end of a plated steel torsion wire; one block is slotted so the wire's torsion can be adjusted by a screw passing through the end piece. A small clamp at the centre of the wire carries a light metal pointer with an adjustable counterpoise. A small weight pan hangs from a notch near the pointer's tip, holding either a wire frame or a metal clip carrying a glass microscope slide. As surface tension acts on the frame or slide, the pointer moves over a graduated vertical scale, and a supplied set of weights allows the force — and hence the surface tension — to be determined.

How It Works

The film or liquid surface pulls down on the suspended frame/slide. This force twists the torsion wire, deflecting the pointer across the graduated scale. By balancing the deflection with the calibrated weights, the student calculates the surface tension of the liquid. The adjustable counterpoise and torsion screw allow the instrument to be zeroed accurately before each measurement.
